Original exhibited oil painting on canvas, beautifully presented in a bold gallery frame, depicting a portrait of a man smoking a pipe. This superb original work has been created in an impressionist style, is entitled 'Stableman with Pipe', and is by UK based listed Russian artist Valeriy Gridnev (b.1956 ). The painting is accompanied by its original invoice from 1995, a letter to the initial buyer from the original exhibition curators, stating that Princess Diana's brother Lord Spencer bought the artist's self portrait for his collection at Althorp House, and a personal photograph of the artist taken during his visit to Althorp in 1994.
Valeriy Borissovich Gridnev was born in Siberia, in the former Soviet Union, and studied at Sverdlovsk Art College and St Petersburg Academy of Arts. He worked at St. Petersburg Academy of Art's until 1994, during which time one of his paintings won the Gold Medal of the USSR Academy of Art, which increased his profile and led to him being elected a member of the Russian Artist's Federation. In 1999 he moved to Hampshire, England where he was commissioned as a portrait artist at Highclere Castle by the 7th Earl of Carnarvon.
