- Original oil painting on board, depicting sheep grazing amongst heather on moorland in the Yorkshire Moors, by Yorkshire artist Gilbert Lewis Creighton (1918–1996), a classic example of this artist's work.Gilbert Lewis Creighton was born in Yorkshire, and grew up in the small village of Appleton-le-Moors, on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park. During the Second World War he served as a Spitfire pilot, and took part in the famous 'Battle of Britain'. Once the war was over he returned to civilian life and became a full-time professional artist. His paintings demonstrate the raw beauty of the Northern English moorland, while his style gives his work depth and texture and perfectly captures the rugged grace of the North Yorkshire Moors.
