- Superb, rare and very large limited edition print on canvas, beautifully presented in a bold, ornate gallery frame, depicting Monet's Water Lilies. This fabulous work is from the 'Genuine Fakes' series, is entitled 'Water Lilies, 1907', and is by the famous art forger, and perpetrator of "the biggest art fraud of the 20th century", John Myatt (b.1945 ).John Myatt was born in Stoke-on-Trent, and, after attending art school, pursued a career in song writing in London, peaking in 1979 with his UK chart hit "Silly Games", performed by Janet Kay. He earned a living through advances and royalties, but tired of the London lifestyle and returned to the Midlands to work as an art teacher. In 1985 his wife left him, and he gave up teaching to look after his children, attempting to make a living painting original works in the style of well-known artists. He advertised his "Genuine fakes" in Private Eye magazine, but one customer, John Drewe, resold some of his paintings as genuine works. When Drewe told him one had sold at Christies for £25,000, he became a willing accomplice to the fraud, and began to paint more pictures in the style of masters. Police arrested him in September 1995 estimating about 200 of his forgeries were sold to prestigious London auction houses and dealers. He confessed to earning around £275,000, however profits from his forgeries exceeded £25 million. His trial began in September 1998, and in February 1999 he was sentenced to one year in prison for conspiracy to defraud, and served four months. Following his release he began to paint commissioned portraits and clear copies, becoming successful in his own right, with exhibitions of his work, and a Sky Arts television show. Today his "genuine fakes" are extremely popular amongst collectors as both original paintings and limited edition prints.- Personally signed by the artist verso- Numbered by the artist verso- Number 50 of only 99 limited edition prints on canvas ever produced- Confirmation of authenticity provided by Gainsborough Fine Art- Beautifully framed and ready to hang, in a heavy, bold, ornate and purposefully aged with hairline stress cracks, gilt gallery frame- Limited edition print size 75cm x 68cm (approx. 29 1/2 inches x 26 3/4 inches)- Frame size 98cm x 89.5cm (approx. 38 1/2 inches x 35 1/4 inches)- Both limited edition print and frame are in excellent condition- Excellent investment - The gallery price for this piece was £3,995.00- Superb centre-piece- Fabulous conversation piece- All prints are carefully packaged to prevent damage during shipping- Please contact us for European and Worldwide shipping prices- If you have any questions about this item, please contact us and we will respond within an hour
