John Meyer was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa.  He worked as an illustrator in London from 1967 to 1969 when he returned to South Africa to become the country’s first full-time, specialist illustrator servicing the advertising industry.  He then turned to painting professionally in 1972 and has exhibited extensively across Europe, America and his home country, developing an international profile enjoyed by few other South African artists. His work has a narrative reminiscent of the film noir genre, moody, austere and tense with intrigue, suspense, romance and eroticism.
