Original oil painting on board, depicting a coastal landscape on Tresco, in The Isles of Scilly, off Cornwall, with gulls flying over coastal dunes in the foreground, and a bay and headland beyond. This tranquil, fine-detailed original work is by former British army officer and artist John Hamilton (1919-1993).
John Hamilton was born in England and studied at Bradfield College. He served in the British Army in India, and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry, during World War 2, afterwhich he settled in the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall, where he started a business, and sketched and painted for relaxation. In 1972 he sold his business and became a professional artist, initially selling his paintings, of the local topography, seascapes, traditional ships, and boats, to tourists. His interest in Second World War Atlantic naval battles led to him creating a series of paintings which are now in the collection of the Imperial War Museum. This led to further series on the War in the Pacific (now part of the U.S. Navy Art Collection), The Falklands War, and Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition.- Signed lower right- Framed and ready to hang, in a gilt painted moulded frame, with a hessian-covered moulded slip- Painting size 29cm x 22cm (approx. 11 3/8 inches x 8 5/8 inches)- Frame size 39cm x 32cm (approx. 15 3/8 inches x 12 5/8 inches)- Both painting and frame are in excellent condition- Excellent investment- Original gift- All paintings are carefully packaged to prevent damage during shipping- Please contact us for European and Worldwide shipping prices- If you have any questions about this item, please contact us and we will respond within an hour
