Ella Spicer (1876-1958)
Original watercolour painting, depicting a view of Lower Queen Street in Auckland, New Zealand, this painting dates back to the early to mid 20th Century, and therefore represents the city as it was at the time, and is by the listed New Zealand artist Ella Spicer (1876-1958).
Eleanor 'Ella' Juliet Spicer was born in Lawrence, New Zealand and studied painting in the nearby city of Dunedin. She studied under English-born artist Fanny Wimperis (1840–1925) and Italian artist Girolamo Nerli (1860–1926), and actually began to exhibit her work from the age of fifteen under her maiden name Ella Adams. She exhibited widely across New Zealand, and her work features in many private collections, as well as in the collection of the Museum of New Zealand.
