Brian Irving (1931-2013)
Original watercolour painting, depicting a Border Collie sheep dog herding sheep, in an extensive Yorkshire Dales landscape, by the listed Yorkshire artist Brian Irving (1931-2013).
Brian Irving, was born in Bradford and moved to Storiths, above Bolton Abbey, where he worked as a sheep farmer, later becoming a milkman in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. He was a self-taught artist who painted in his spare time, however, early retirement due to failing health, saw him solely focus on his art. A sell-out exhibition of his Dales landscapes at the Yorkshire Arts Exhibition, Ilkley in 1981, led to his first solo exhibition later that year, and numerous further exhibitions in the following years, including at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI) and The Royal Watercolour Society (RWS). In 1983 he took over the running of the Cottage Gallery, Skipton, where he displayed and sold his work, and he spent the last 30 years of his life living near Kilnsey in the Wharfe Valley.
